At Homestead, we will plan your space considering these items:

1. Cooking: The primary function of a kitchen is to provide a space for cooking and preparing meals. This involves using appliances such as stoves, ovens, microwaves, and other cooking tools.

2. Food Storage: Kitchens typically include storage areas for keeping ingredients, perishable items, and non-perishable goods. This can include refrigerators, freezers, cabinets, and pantry space.

3. Cleaning: Kitchens need to be kept clean, and this involves tasks such as washing dishes, cleaning countertops, and maintaining appliances. A sink and dishwasher are common features for cleaning purposes.

4. Meal Planning: Some kitchens are used for meal planning and organizing, including areas for writing grocery lists, planning menus, and keeping track of schedules.

5. Dining: In many homes, the kitchen also serves as a dining area, especially in smaller spaces or open floor plans. It may have a table and chairs for family meals.

6. Socializing: Kitchens often become a gathering place for socializing. People may congregate in the kitchen while meals are being prepared or during informal gatherings.

7. Baking: Baking is a specific aspect of cooking that may require additional appliances and tools. Kitchens often include ovens, mixers, and baking sheets for this purpose.

8. Food Preparation: Beyond cooking, kitchens are used for various food preparation tasks, such as chopping, peeling, and slicing. Countertop space and cutting boards are essential for these activities.

9. Waste Management: Kitchens generate waste in the form of food scraps and packaging. Garbage and recycling bins are typically located in or near the kitchen for easy disposal.

10. Appliance Use: Kitchens house various appliances like toasters, blenders, coffee makers, and more, depending on personal preferences and cooking habits.

11. Storage for Cookware and Utensils: Kitchens provide storage for pots, pans, utensils, and other cooking tools. This can include drawers, cabinets, and hanging racks.

12. Organization: An organized kitchen is more efficient. Design elements like shelving, drawer dividers, and storage containers contribute to a well-organized space.

13. Health and Safety: Kitchens need to adhere to health and safety standards. This involves proper storage of food, cleanliness, and the use of safe cooking practices.

14. Technological Integration: Modern kitchens may integrate technology for tasks such as recipe management, smart home control, and entertainment.

WINE CELLARS:

Creating a custom wine cellar involves a blend of functionality, aesthetics, and technological considerations. Whether it's a small closet converted into a wine storage space or a dedicated cellar with a tasting area, thoughtful design enhances the enjoyment and preservation of your wine collection.  (learn more)

There are several things to consider for you wine cellar:

1. Location: Choose a suitable location for the wine cellar, considering factors like temperature stability, lack of direct sunlight, and minimal vibration. Options include basements, dedicated rooms, or even under-stair spaces.

2. Climate Control: Install a climate control system to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity level. Ideal wine storage conditions include a temperature range of 55-59°F (13-15°C) and humidity levels between 60-70%.

3. Insulation: Proper insulation is crucial to prevent temperature fluctuations. Insulate walls, ceiling, and floor to maintain a stable climate within the cellar.

4. Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation to allow for air circulation. This is important for preventing musty odors and maintaining consistent conditions. Ventilation systems may include exhaust fans or passive vents.

5. Wine Racks and Shelving: Custom wine racks and shelving are central to the design. Consider the type of racks, such as individual bottle holders, diamond bins, or display shelves. Materials like wood, metal, or a combination can be used for the racks, depending on the desired aesthetic.

6. Bottle Orientation: Choose between horizontal and angled bottle storage. Horizontal storage ensures the wine stays in contact with the cork, preventing it from drying out and compromising the seal.

7. Lighting: Use low-heat LED lighting to illuminate the wine cellar without affecting the temperature. Consider LED strip lighting or spotlights to showcase specific areas or wine collections.

8. Security: Install a secure door and possibly a locking mechanism to protect valuable wine collections. Consider security systems or sensors to monitor the wine cellar.

9. Flooring: Choose a flooring material that can withstand the humidity of the wine cellar. Options include sealed concrete, ceramic tiles, or natural stone. Consider anti-slip flooring for safety.

10. Tasting Area: If space allows, create a tasting area within the wine cellar. Include a small table, chairs, and possibly a spittoon for wine tasting sessions.

11. Wine Cooling Unit: Invest in a quality wine cooling unit to maintain the desired temperature. Cooling units may be ducted or self-contained, and their capacity should match the size of the cellar.

12. Wine Cellar Door: Choose an insulated and sealed door to maintain the climate inside the cellar. Glass doors can add a stylish touch while allowing a view of the wine collection.

13. Humidity Control: Install a humidification system to control and maintain the proper humidity level. This is especially important in dry climates to prevent corks from drying out.

14. Wine Cellar Management System: Consider a wine cellar management system or app to keep track of your wine inventory, tasting notes, and cellar conditions.

15. Custom Art and Decor: Personalize the wine cellar with custom art, decor, or even a mural that enhances the overall ambiance.

16. Wine Accessories and Storage: Include storage for wine accessories such as corkscrews, glasses, and decanters.
Customized storage for large-format bottles, magnums, or Champagne bottles may also be considered.

17. Wine Cellar Theme: Consider a theme for the wine cellar, such as a rustic wine cellar with wooden elements or a modern and minimalist design.

18. Wine Cellar Furniture: If space allows, add furniture such as a table, chairs, or a tasting bar to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

CLOSETS:

Designing custom closets allows you to maximize storage space, organize your belongings, and create a personalized and aesthetically pleasing storage solution. It's an opportunity to blend functionality with aesthetics, turning your closet into a well-designed and efficient space. (learn more)

Our designers will help you consider the following:

1. Space Assessment: Evaluate the available space for the closet, considering dimensions, layout, and any architectural features that may impact the design.

2. Storage Requirements: Identify your storage needs, including hanging space for clothes, shelves for folded items, drawers for accessories, and specific storage for shoes, bags, or other items.

3. Custom Shelving and Drawers: Incorporate adjustable shelves and drawers to accommodate different types and sizes of items.
Customize the layout to include specific sections for shoes, folded clothes, and accessories.

4. Hanging Rods: Customize the height and configuration of hanging rods to accommodate various types of clothing, including long dresses, shirts, and shorter items.

5. Built-In Lighting: Integrate built-in lighting to illuminate the closet, making it easier to see and access items. LED strip lights, puck lights, or motion-activated lights are popular choices.

6. Accessory Storage: Incorporate specific storage solutions for accessories, such as jewelry trays, tie racks, belt hooks, or pull-out accessory trays.

7. Mirrors: Consider adding mirrors to the closet doors or within the closet space. Mirrors can help with outfit selection and visually expand the space.

8. Folding Station: If space allows, create a designated folding station with a countertop for folding clothes or laying out outfits.

9. Pull-Out Hampers: Install pull-out hampers or laundry baskets to keep dirty clothes organized and out of sight.

10. Island or Seating Area: In larger closets, consider adding an island with additional storage, drawers, or a seating area. Islands can serve as a central organizing feature.

11. Color Scheme: Choose a color scheme that complements the overall design of your home or reflects your personal style. Light colors can make the space feel larger, while darker colors add a touch of sophistication.

12. Tech Integration: Integrate technology, such as smart lighting, automated closet rods, or charging stations for devices. Smart solutions can enhance convenience and functionality.

13. Ventilation:

Ensure proper ventilation within the closet to prevent musty odors and maintain the freshness of your clothing. Louvered doors or a small ventilation system can help.

14. Accessibility: Design the closet with accessibility in mind, ensuring that items are within easy reach.
Consider pull-down or pull-out racks for higher shelves.

FRAMELESS/FRAMED CABINETS:

Frameless cabinets, also known as European-style cabinets, differ from framed cabinets in their construction and appearance.  Framed cabinets have a solid wood frame around the front of the cabinet box, known as the face frame. (learn more)

In framed cabinets, the cabinet doors are attached to the face frame. The doors may partially or fully overlay the face frame, or they may be inset within the frame, depending on the design.  Framed inset doors can sometimes have a small bead detail around the frame for added interest.  Framed cabinets often have a more traditional or classic appearance.

Unlike framed cabinets, frameless cabinets do not have a face frame at the front. The cabinet doors are attached directly to the sides of the cabinet box.  Frameless cabinets often feature full overlay doors, meaning the doors cover the entire front of the cabinet box. This creates a seamless, modern look.

Which is right for you?  Our Design team will guide you.  A showroom visit is an excellent way to see the various styles.

STYLES/FINISHES/

MATERIALS/CONSTRUCTION:

Cabinet styles can significantly influence the overall aesthetic and functionality of a space. There are various cabinet styles, each with its own characteristics and design elements.  Additionally, the choice of materials, finishes, and hardware can further enhance the chosen cabinet style.  (learn more)

Styles include Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary or something unique.

Traditional style cabinets often have a shaker style door and some degree of detail in the crown and moldings and in the overall design.

Transitional style cabinets have modified Shaker doors (eg. a narrow or wide rail) or flat style door vs a shaker but maintain some of the traditional details in the design.

Contemporary style cabinets have flat style doors, and the design emphasizes a clean and continuous look.  A modern look can be achieved by adding for example:  high gloss doors.

Shaker cabinet doors come in a wide variety of designs.  Flat panel doors give a more transitional or contemporary feel.

Finishes include stained or painted with interesting options like glaze or distressed textures.  Melamine textured finishes are also available for flat syle doors.  For that unique look we carry a designer line of doors.

Cabinets with wood doors include commonly known species such as Walnut or Oak.   Wood grains can be set to run vertically, which is more traditional.  Wood grains can be set to run horizontally which gives a more transitional or contemporary feel.  Often quarter sawn or rift cut wood grains are chosen on flat style doors to give an interesting linear feel.

Construction methods include several choices for the cabinets box.  Birch ply is common along with white melamine.  Doors are machined to the highest standard to ensure a perfect fit.  Soft close slides and hinges make the cabinets a pleasure to use.
